One Food System

Integrating terrestrial and aquatic food systems

– HLPF2024 Side Event

Global Action Network will host an onsite side event during HLPF 2024 on behalf of Norway at HLPF2024 in New York City, USA.

Time: 13:15-14:30, 15 July 2024 (New York Time)

Location: Conference Room B at UN Headquarters

Event description

We are running out of time to reach the SDGs, particularly SDG 2 on zero hunger and SDG 14 on life below water. In order to reach all 17 SDGs, it is crucial that we enhance our systematic thinking, efficiently translate science into policy, and promote and showcase good practices. Despite the importance of aquatic foods to sustainable food systems and food security, they are often overlooked in food and nutrition policies. To create sustainable food systems, both aquatic and terrestrial food resources should be integrated and considered. This side event will showcase the importance of coordinated efforts and circular approaches to achieve sustainable food systems, and how aquaculture may be key to bridging aquatic and terrestrial resources and increasing resilience to global and local challenges within food and feed systems. The event will bring together a diverse group of panelists, including young and local voices alongside high-level policymakers, scientists, and key UN agencies, to explore possible solutions and discuss how to scale them. Ranging from the macro level associated with commodities to micro level embedded within local communities – the event will offer diverse perspectives and bridge science and policy. The event seeks to identify actionable steps necessary to accelerate the transition towards sustainable food systems integrating aquatic and terrestrial resources.
