The Global Action Network Action Plan includes arranging annual meetings, workshops and events, recognizing interested parties, and establishing connections to promote collaboration and interaction among cross-sectorial actors focusing on the important elements for food security from Healthy Waters to Healthy People.

High-Level Political Forum 2024 Side Event: One food system - Integrating terrestrial and aquatic food systems
The Global Action Network hosted a side event on behalf of Norway at HLPF2024 on 15 July 2024 at UN Headquarters in New York City, the USA. This event showcased diverse perspectives to integrate aquatic and terrestrial food resources, and bridge science and policy to identify actionable steps necessary to accelerate the transition towards sustainable food systems.
Committee on Fisheries 36 Side Event: The case for aquatic blue food in achieving SDG 2 (zero hunger) - Reducing hunger and improving nutrition outcomes
The Global Action Network and Aquatic Blue Food Coalition co-hosted a side event at COFI36 on 9 July 2024 at FAO Headquarters in Rome, Italy. This event underscored the importance of reliable sources for nutrient values of aquatic foods and highlighted the role of sustainable fisheries and aquaculture, especially small-scale producers. This event also debated the importance of knowledge to enable the development of sustainable, resilient and inclusive food systems policies and programs that ensured equitable distribution and enhance climate resilience in the sector.
The Global Action Network will continuously identify challenges, exchange knowledge and solutions related to the key elements of food security. Through the Gain and Share Tool, you can gain and share knowledge to promote sustainable food from the oceans and inland waters for food security and nutrition.
In October 2023, FAO and WHO held the second Joint FAO/WHO Expert Consultation on the Risks and Benefits of Fish Consumption to analyse new scientific evidence (background document of evidence) on the matter and draw relevant conclusions and recommendations. The overall conclusions of the exercise show that consuming fish provides energy, protein, and a range of other nutrients important for health, and that there are benefits related to fish consumption during all life stages (pregnancy, childhood and adulthood).
Achievements and Success of the BMZ Project ' Sustainable Aquaculture in Fisheries'
Global Programme “Sustainable Fisheries and Aquaculture” - commissioned by the German Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development and implemented by GIZ - aims to improve access to more fish and higher incomes derived from sustainable and resource-friendly fisheries and aquaculture for the population facing food insecurity.
After eight years of implementation and closure of the two projects in Malawi and Madagascar, the final evaluations show that the various project activities helped to achieve the targets, and even exceed them in some regards.
